Houston Bikeway System
Client: City of Houston Department of Public Works and Engineering
Artist Team: Dan Havel, Kate Petley, George Sacaris, Randy Woodard
Engineers: Wilbur Smith Associates
Civic Art & Design services: Management of artist selection; design management
Project Dates: 1995-2001 (ongoing)

The Houston Bikeway System is a comprehensive expansion of Houston’s network of bicycle paths. Artist participation was in two main areas. Bridge Railing design: The artist team developed a rolling wave pattern for the retaining walls and railings of a series of bayou bridges, with the wavy railings of steel, and the retaining walls of precast concrete with a low-relief pattern of leaves. Signage: The artist team developed a system logo, trail maps, trail markers, street identifiers, mile markers, and a standard flood gauge.

The Wayfinding project is composed of a unified system of automotive and pedestrian signage, designed to identify downtown services and facilities, and direct visitors to them. The back side of each sign serves as a “canvas” for artwork by the selected artists.
