George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Houston
Renovation, Pedestrian Connectors Terminal A

Passing Through by Leamon Green is inspired by two elements of the pedestrian connector.  On the one hand, the space is a transitional zone for travelers passing between destinations and on the other hand it is an area that the architect envisioned to be full of light.  Green loved the extensive natural light allowed by the great expanse of glass walls.  Since Green is primarily a two dimensional artist, it was natural for him to use the glass expanse as canvas.  He has etched the glass with illustrations of travelers passing through different cultures of the world. For Green, one of the most interesting elements of the piece is the effect the sunlight has on the glass and the shadows that are cast.  Green feels these shapes and shadows extend the artwork beyond the confines of the glass planes.

In addition to the large panes of etched glass, Green also created a series of wall-mounted, fiber-optic light boxes utilizing colorful printed acrylic interlayers laminated between sheets of glass.  These light boxes continue the themes established in the larger panes, but provide delightful colorful and intimate vignettes where there is no natural light.  Finally, Green worked with the architect on the design of the terrazzo floor in this area.
